President Ahmadinejad to Attend Int’l Nowrouz Celebrations in Turkmenistan

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is slated to pay a visit to Turkmenistan in a bid to take part in the international Nowrouz (the beginning of the Persian New Year) celebration ceremonies.

Ahmadinejad will be in Turkmenistan in Farvardin or the first month of the next Persian year which will start on March 21.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon as well as Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov will attend the ceremony.

Last month, Turkmen Minister of Culture Gunca Mammedowa announced that Turkmenistan is scheduled to host the next international ceremonies to celebrate Nowrouz.

The minister said that different cultural and artistic programs will be held on the sidelines of the event.

The 3rd International Nowrouz Celebrations were held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on March 25, 2012 with President Ahmadinejad and his Tajik, Afghan and Pakistani counterparts in attendance.

Iran first organized the International Nowrouz Celebrations. The second International Nowrouz Celebrations were held in Tehran in 2011.

Nowrouz, which coincides with the first day of spring on the solar calendar, is mostly celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

The International Day of Nowrouz was registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on February 23, 2010.
