NEW YORK, (SANA)- The UN Security Council on Wednesday strongly denounced the detainment of a number of personnel from the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Golan by an armed terrorist group, demanding their immediate release without preconditions.
In a statement following a closed Security Council session, Russia’s Permanent Representative Vitaly Churkin said that the Council members strongly denounce the detainment of over 20 UNDOF personnel by gunmen from the Syrian opposition, and that they call on all sides involved to cooperate with the UN mission in Golan to allow it to carry out its work and guarantee their safety.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also denounced the detainment of UNDOF members, with UN Spokesman Martin Nesirky relaying Ki-moon’s denouncement and saying that the detained persons number 21 and that they’re held by armed persons near the village of Jamleh, calling for their immediate release and stressing the need for all sides to respect the UN forces’ freedom of movement and security.
Earlier, UN Deputy Spokesman Eduardo Del Buey announced that 30 gunmen have detained nearly 20 members of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Golan who were on a routine mission at the time of their detainment.
Del Buey said that the UN mission sent a team to evaluate the situation and attempt to find a solution.
On March 1st, Churkin warned that the presence of armed groups in the area where UN forces are deployed in Golan constitutes a threat to those forces, saying that the sides which support these groups’ activities are playing a very dangerous game.
