The Security Council Must Stop Placating the U.S. with Frivolous, Self-Serving Sessions and Confront its Destabilizing Behavior and Violations of International Law

On 20 September 2018, during a UN Security Council meeting under the agenda item “situation in the Middle East”, including the Palestinian question, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations desperately tried to demonize Iran to distract attention away from the atrocities as well as the expansionist and oppressive policies of the Israeli regime and to prevent her country from being exposed and accountable to the international community for all of its recent destructive policies regarding Palestine. However, she ludicrously failed.

On Iran, while completely disregarding the Council’s rules of procedure and its longstanding established practice, she allocated her entire statement exclusively to misinformation, fabrications and unfounded allegations on Iran.

On Palestine, all Council members except the U.S. exclusively focused on Israel despite the complaint by the U.S. Ambassador. More importantly, given the fact that the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East was expected to present to this meeting his quarterly report on the implementation of resolution 2334, which focuses largely on Israeli settlements, most of the Council members condemned Israel’s expanded settlement activities, calling them illegal and in violation of international law and resolutions of the UN Security Council.

Abusing the Council’s Presidency, the U.S. Ambassador also attempted to criticize Iran’s role in Iraq, describing it as being “outside the community of law-abiding nations”; a description the U.S. deserves including for deceiving the international community and invading Iraq in a material breach of international law and the UN Charter. This criticism comes after her continued efforts to deprive the Palestinians of an opportunity to defend their inalienable rights and just cause in the Council as well as preventing the Israeli regime from being exposed to the international community and in holding it accountable for all of its illegal activities and oppressive practices, including the expansionist and destabilizing policies in the region and beyond.

The unwarranted American aggression against Iraq, wherein it spent $7 trillion and killed millions, which President Trump now calls “the worst single mistake ever made in the [U.S.] history”, had the most devastating impact in Iraq and in the region after all-out and chronic regional threats that were a result of the occupation of territories of certain countries in the region by the Israeli regime. In contrast to the U.S., who blatantly violated Iraq’s sovereignty, Iran will continue to fully respect this country’s sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity. Iran works to assist Iraq’s recovery from the legacy of Saddam’s tyranny and the U.S. invasion so it can emerge as a secure and prosperous country from the ashes of a vicious cycle of war and insecurity imposed on it by the U.S. and U.S.-backed terrorists. Now Iran is answering positively and genuinely to the official request by a neighboring country, which enjoys a common religious, cultural and historical background, for help to reconstruct Iraq and more importantly, for combating terrorist groups such as Daesh, who according to President Trump, was created by the United States.
